Historical fencing (HEMA) is the study of how people actually interacted with the sword, reconstructed from the books of historical masters and pressure-tested against a resisting partner. We treat it as an athletic discipline, an art and a sport: distance management until it's automatic, technique you can land against someone trying to stop you, and fencing that makes you better each week.

We compete, we cross-train with other clubs, and we welcome anyone 18 or older who's willing to put in the time. Whatever your athletic background. Your first class is free and we'll lend you everything you need to try it.

Buffalo Historical Fencing is incorporated as a 501(c)(7) non-profit social club. Dues go back into the club — the space we train in, the loaner gear we hand new students, and the equipment that keeps everyone safe.
